Going Green for the Holidays

Here are a few ways us folks at Bummis like to “green up” for the holidays—at home and at work.

Rather than spending tons of money and creating waste by purchasing paper cards, we use ecards instead. This allows us to use the money we would have spent to give back to the community! At the same time, we totally understand that an actual card is both fun and beautiful, and can be more special than an ecard (especially for those collectors out there!). So why not reuse the cards you received last year by cutting off the backs and turning them into postcards?

When it comes to wrapping gifts , remember the 3 R’s:
Reuse – old wrapping paper
Recycle – newspaper (the cartoon section works great!)
Reduce – (waste, that is) by using cloth bags instead of plastic or paper

When giving gifts, remember that you don’t have to go out and spend a ton on something new. Why not go vintage and buy from a second hand or consignment shop?

Instead of buying a tree (or using a fake tree), decorate one of the beautiful plants you already own. (Dayna’s family always decorates the 10 foot cactus they have in the living room).
And if you choose to use lights, use LEDs, which use less energy—and put them on a timer to limit their use.

Rather than purchasing new decorations (we get tired of the old ones, too!), do a swap with your neighbours and friends!

Turn the stress of decorating into family fun-time:
Build a snowman
Create centre-pieces out of candy and organic chocolate truffles (mmm….)
Make strands of popcorn and dried cranberries (and when the holidays are done—hello compost!)

Happy Holidays!

Cloth diapers, waste reduction, and local governments

Waste reduction is a huge and obvious environmental benefit of using cloth diapers, and a good argument for encouraging parents to incorporate even some reusable diapers into their routine. Who hasn't heard of overly full landfills and municipalities transporting garbage elsewhere by barge because there is no place left in their environs to dump it? And how about the controversy around dumping solid waste into landfills - those little packages of poop in single-use diapers, wrapped up in plastic and destined to remain mummified in landfills forever? Or maybe even worse - the prospect of fecal matter leaching into our groundwater from disposable diapers?

I want to tell you about this amazing thing happening here in Quebec! In this province it costs approximately $130 for a municipality  to dispose of one tonne of garbage - which is approximately the same amount of garbage estimated to be generated by one baby in single-use (disposable) diapers. More and more Quebec municipalities have been offering parents money to buy cloth diapers! The amounts offered are between $100 and $150. What a fantastic way to reduce the amount of garbage generated by a town or city - diverting the same amount of money about to be spent on disposal of waste into preventing that very same waste from being created in the first place! It actively encourages parents to actually "reduce, re-use, and re-cycle".

So run - don't walk! Go talk to your own city councilors, mayors and decision-makers. Tell them you have this brilliant idea that will solve their garbage problem ....

If you received an order shipped from our USA warehouse a couple weeks ago – it may have been shipped by me! While our shipper Candy was in Florida for the birth of her new grandchild Navella Love, I jumped at the opportunity to help out with shipping in the US. It's always fun for me to work in different parts of the business now and again – I learn a ton and am able to tweak systems (my favourite thing to do).

Navella Love

I also just really enjoy going to our American warehouse. It’s in a tiny community right on the awesome St. Lawrence – the river that constitutes the border between Canada and the United States for so many miles. Morristown is straight across the river from Brockville, Ontario. Lots of history, sleepy beautiful cemeteries - all in a setting of gorgeous islands, ospreys and loons, foxes, coyotes and porcupines ....

It is also one of the poorest counties in New York State - full of family farms (including many Amish) and lots of abandoned family farms. The tiny local bank that holds our mortgage is just like Jimmy Stewart’s bank in "It's a Wonderful Life" and is amazing to deal with. In fact all our local suppliers are great to work with - because it is such a small community and our prosperity really matters to them. They have always been welcoming and helpful and interested in what we do.  Even the local border guards! Every time I cross the border they ask what I do, and it is nearly ALWAYS an opportunity to tell someone how great cloth diapers are these days!

Fran and Candy

Candy has worked in our USA warehouse for several years now. Originally from Iowa, she has farmed, owned antique businesses, and lived all over the country. She and her Dan now raise Percherons at their beautiful farm: www.blackcherrypercherons.com . She lives in the heart of Amish country, and is good friends with many of her Amish neighbours. Candy’s new grandbaby Navella Love, is of course equipped with lots of beautiful cloth diapers!

Fran moved upstate from Orange County where she worked as a nurse in the veteran’s hospital for many years. She and her husband Norm love living in the country and have the most amazing and bounteous garden including a truly enormous asparagus patch (she shares!).

Stay tuned for another transmission from Planet Bummis ....

I just have to share this letter with you from our pal Magnus at Tots Bots in the UK. I sent him a link to information from the American media about the new disposable diaper recycling plant in the UK. I want you to read his response - I liked it!

Emile loves his cloth diapers!

Hi Betsy

The diaper recycling plant can only add to the environmental impact of disposables. As yet they have not disclosed the required chemical, water or power inputs required per tonne of waste recycled. Funny how they are happy to talk about the energy used to wash cloth but conveniently don't mention it in relation to this plant. It's important to remember that the revised LCA report (Life Cycle Analysis)(UK) concluded that cloth is up to 40% better for the environment than disposables. This report reached those conclusions after assessing:

1. Manufacturing of disposables (no post-purchase impact assessed)
2. Manufacturing of cloth + post purchase washing etc.

It would be interesting to see what the new environmental benefit of cloth would be if we add in the post-purchase data for recycling disposables.

Folks need to accept that we must adopt a new way of living/consuming and quickly. We can't keep stripping resources and burning oil. Recycling plants like this should be made to offer up all the relevant data and not hoodwink parents into thinking they are doing their bit when they are not. Sorry about the rant but I so hate the irresponsible reporting of things like this. I think cloth diapering is the best way to go - along with metal cutlery, proper crockery, quality clothing (the kind that lasts) etc.

Have a good weekend Betsy. We can continue saving the planet on Monday...

Magnus

Shari with some of her happy customers!

Here's a little more about Baby Luv Boutique:

Baby Luv Boutique is an online boutique that retails baby and infant items as well as products for Mom and the whole family. The business, owned by Shari Hinz, is based in Humboldt, Saskatchewan and they serve a very active local area market as well as the rest of Canada. Shari began the business in late 2006 and it went live to the public in April 2007. Baby Luv Boutique specializes in modern cloth diapers and carries a number of types and brands, including products from Bummis. They offer regular public workshops in both Humboldt and Saskatoon and this allows them to educate clients on the benefits of choosing cloth diapers and provide them with an opportunity to see the variety of products available in the market today.

"Working with our clients and their families is the most rewarding aspect of our business," Shari indicated. "When we have clients who thank us for helping them make the choice to use cloth diapers for their child, that is the what motivates us to continue providing the products and services we offer."

The business has grown quite rapidly over the past two years and Baby Luv Boutique is proud to offer one of the largest selections of cloth diaper products in Canada. They stock everything from prefolds and covers to All In One diapers - something for every family no matter what their budget or needs are. They also try to offer as many Canadian and US made products as they can, which is something that has been important to both Hinz and their client base.
